Thanks for your patience and your support. With VioletTM we want to create the best possible device and user experience so you fall in love with it. We also want the device to improve your lives and help you understand and educate yourself about the impact of UV rays and vitamin D on your bodies and long term health.
We realize you have been waiting for a while now to receive and use your VioletTM and start using it to enjoy the sun without damaging your skin and we are working hard to reach this goal. We have been busy doing a lot of testing because of issues and challenging cases other wearables like activity trackers don’t encounter. VioletTM needs to be exposed to the sun to make accurate measurements and we have been improving our algorithms to take into account the placement of the device. But the major reason for the shipping delay has been manufacturing. As a small start up it is hard for us to get priority in the factory line.
To speed up the device shipment, we decided to have two production runs. All pre-order customers will have the privilege to be part of the first batch. This batch is smaller because our manufacturing facility can prioritize small runs and we wanted you to get VioletTM as early as possible. We have thus stopped pre-orders on our website to focus on the 1st batch but don’t worry, we will soon re-open orders for the 2nd larger batch of production. You can register your email on our website to be notified when we get close to ship our 2nd batch of products.
Now, for all of you who pre-ordered and are waiting for your VioletTM, here is an update on where we are at:
There are four major tasks and challenges we are working on in parallel and hope to finish before we start our first shipment of VioletTM.
(1) Product quality: We sent our engineering team to China and worked with our manufacturer’s engineering team to make sure that VioletTM is manufactured exactly the way we wanted. We wanted to share with you some pictures of the trip.
From this trip, we have solved most of the engineering problems. However, there is an unexpected delay in this process. There are some issues about an excessive transient current drawing from the battery that requires some attention. In simpler words, the battery drains faster than we expected. As a small startup with limited resources, we have to spend more time resolving these issues. Though it will affect the shipping date, we are confident that we will deliver a high quality VioletTM to your hands as soon as we can.
(2) Functionality We are preparing our device for UV exposure studies by 3rd parties. We are working on setting up some contacts with Australian and Indian universities that study UV sensors/atmospheric monitoring focused on radiation to perform field testing and get a better understanding of how Violet performs on the field. We don’t wantVioletTM to be yet another gadget. Our goal is to develop a high standard solution to allow users to safely enjoy the sun.
(3) Testing: We want to broaden our beta testing group because we believe in personalized medicine and the more users we test with the better the quality. This will require extra time but eventually a better product.
(4) Companion app: Finally, we released an early version of the Violet companion app a few months ago and we are improving it to seamlessly work with our device. The app uses the UV Index forecast to measure the user UV exposure. It is not very accurate as it doesn’t track the real UV dose received by the user and forecast data is not always precise but it is a very good educational tool. The app is free in the Android Google Play store. You can download it here.
Both our Android and iOS apps are in progress and we are working on improving the Bluetooth communication with the device and adding features.

This was really cool to find. It’s unrealistic but I have my fingers crossed of it starting to ship by the end of this month. I am going to a very bright country in the summer.
